EQUITY & EXCELLENCE FOR ALL STUDENTS THROUGH INTEGRATING ACADEMIC, SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Overview: The Teacher Union Reform Network (TURN) Regions are partnering with the Consortium for Educational Change to sponsor a summer leadership conference to engage teacher leaders in school, district and community collaborative partnerships that strive to ensure equity and excellence for all students. Over the past several years, our TURN regions have been providing opportunities for labor-management-community teams to work collaboratively to examine programs, policies and practices that impact teaching effectiveness and student learning. We have been working to develop and support collaborative partnerships that empower practitioners in integrating academic, social & emotional learning standards and professional practices to ensure all students succeed.Partners: We continue to seek resources and partners to support the work of our local and state labor-management collaborative teams in our TURN Regions. American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and the National Education Association (NEA) as well as members of our Teacher Union Reform Network provide resources and tools to assist our teams in implementing teaching and learning strategies that engage school, district, union, teacher, para-professional and community leaders.
Purpose: The Regional TURN Summer Conference will bring together union-district collaborative teams led by school and teacher leaders to learn from practitioners and action research case studies focused on addressing the needs of all students. This conference will focus on empowering teacher and paraprofessional leaders with a greater understanding of the impact of poverty on the learner, the teacher and the environment and will showcase strategies that engage school, district, union and community leaders to help all students be successful. We hope our Regional TURN Communities of Practice will provide additional support to these participating teams as they strive to empower and support school and community leaders in planning and implementing strategies that drive equity and excellence for all students.
Objectives: Participants will:
•Identify & strengthen collaborative partnerships, structures and processes needed to integrate academic, social and emotional learning strategies
•Explore research, policies and practices related to long term collaborative partnerships and social-emotional learning, with student outcomes and school performance
•Explore opportunities to improve pedagogical practices that deepen learning through collaborative learning teams
•Develop and share a team plan to enhance efforts to communicate and implement the integration of academic, social and emotional learning standards and practices •Strengthen local and regional Communities of Practice to support the implementation of team strategies to build collaborative partnerships to integrate academic, social & emotional learning for all students.
This conference is designed to assist union-district collaborative teams to engage teacher leaders and community partners in developing strategies to establish school-wide communities of practice focused on developing the whole child as a learner in the 21st Century.
What: Two-Day Summer Conference for Regional TURN teams that focus on engaging teacher leadership in Communities of Practice focused on poverty, proficiency, professional practices and partnerships.When: July 28, 2016, 8:30am-4:30pmJuly 29, 2016, 8:30am -3:00pm
Where: DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Chicago-Downers Grove, 2111 Butterfield Rd., Downers Grove, ILWho: District Teams of 6 people (1 district leader, 1 union leader and 4 teacher leaders who represent grades K-12 and key content/specialty areas)We recommend that our Regional TURN Coordinators work with school and district leaders to establish union-district collaborative teams. These teams should include teacher leaders representing grades K-12 and key content areas in addition to one district leader and one union leader who are in positions to support the team in implementing their efforts.
Conference Support:
•Registration fees and Hotel Accommodations for up to 6 participating team members will be covered by the Consortium for Educational Change (CEC).
•Airfare for up to 6 participating team members will be reimbursed by CEC (up to $650 per person) upon submission of CEC travel reimbursement form and copy of airline ticket receipt.
Registration Process and Expectations:
1. Assemble a Team: Regional TURN Coordinators will work with school-district leaders to assemble a team that includes 1 district leader, 1 union leader and 4 teacher leaders who represent grades K-12 and key content/specialty areas.
2. On-line Team Registration: A Team Contact Person will be required to register all participating team members. Registration Deadline: July 15, 2016 or as space allows
3. Airline Travel Arrangements:
•Upon registration confirmation from CEC, union-district collaborative team members will be expected to:
•Make individual flight travel arrangements as early as possible to keep travel costs below the $650 per person cap. CEC will reimburse team members up to $650 per person for those traveling by air or mileage for district teams traveling together by car/van.
•Submit travel reimbursement form and other required documenetation by August 15, 2016. Reimbursement checks for travel will be mailed to designated contact person as determined by each team, upon submission of appropriate documentation (action plans, post conference evaluation and travel reimbursement form and receipts.)
4. Team Expectations:
•Fully participate in conference activities during the entire 2-day conference.
•Team Contact Person is responsible for submitting a Team Action Plan to CEC at the end of the conference.
•Team Participants will complete and submit the Online Conference Evaluation.
•Team Participants agree to develop, communicate and share their collaborative efforts to implement the CCRS in partnership with the Regional TURN Communities of Practice.
•Continued union-district team engagement in Regional TURN activities.
